“Tap Dance with your Hands” is a class designed to explore balance, rhythm and movement with the percussion instrument known as Khartal. Khartal, a traditional Indian percussion instrument, shares a rhythmic lineage with spoons, bones, and castanets—but remains largely unknown outside its cultural roots. One of the oldest handheld rhythm instruments from India, the Khartal is made up of four flat wooden pieces: two held between the thumbs and two resting on the fingers. With a flick of the hand, it produces sharp, captivating rhythms. Compact, travel-friendly, and crafted to endure for generations, the Khartal is both a musical tool and a timeless cultural artifact.
