This September marks the 100th birthday of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, who was raised and brought up musically in Philadelphia. Andrew will present a three-part series that discusses the three periods of John Coltrane's evolution and demonstrates how to apply what he learned from those periods to create original music. The first period was from 1957 to 1961, when he rejoined the Miles Davis Quintet. The second period was from 1961 to 1965, when he had his classic quartet and created landmark recordings such as A Love Supreme. The third period was from 1965 to 1967, when he was exploring avant-garde music, and eventually to the end of his career and life. This will all lead up to September 23rd, which is his actual birthdate.
